Coverage of Prescribed Drugs during a Drug Shortage

The Oklahoma Health Care Authority will seek approval of a policy amendment to address special circumstances arising from drug shortages to mitigate the effects of shortages and to ensure continued access to medication. A shortage must be identified by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), or the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) for non-covered outpatient drugs to be covered when medically necessary during a drug shortage. This includes imported drugs authorized for temporary import by the FDA. Reimbursement for drugs covered during a drug shortage will be according to existing payment methodology for covered outpatient drugs and will be subject to the same requirements and limitations, such as prior authorization.
