Description
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), proposes to make safety improvements to US-169 starting from East 66th Street North and extending north two miles to East 86th Street North in Owasso, Oklahoma. This segment of US-169 is a divided highway with four 12-foot-wide paved driving lanes, 10-foot-wide outside shoulders, and 4-foot-wide inside shoulders. The northbound and southbound lanes are divided by a 32-foot-wide grassed median. The roadway has deteriorating pavement, drainage issues, and higher than average traffic. The 2024 traffic volumes are 66,114 vehicles per day (vpd), which are projected to increase to 86,914 vpd by 2044.
ODOT is developing design plans for improving this segment of US-169 while taking into consideration the cost of construction and potential environmental concerns. This new segment of highway will match the previous improvements south of East 66th Street North. It will be a six-lane divided highway with a concrete median barrier. The driving lanes will be 12-feet-wide with 10-foot-wide outside shoulders and 8-foot-wide inside shoulders. All improvements will be made on existing alignment and within current ODOT right-of-way. The third lane for north- and southbound traffic will be constructed within the center median. A concrete barrier with mounted light poles will be constructed to divide the highway to improve safety, and a median drainage system will be installed to facilitate drainage. The existing pavement will be milled and overlaid to create a smooth and consistent driving surface. Improvements will occur in phases so that there are two open driving lanes in both directions throughout the construction process.
This project is a continuation of the improvements necessary to meet local and regional travel demands, increasing traffic volumes, and modern design standards progressing along the US-169 corridor.
