Description
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), in cooperation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), is proposing to improve the intersection of Duncan Bypass and Elk Avenue in Duncan, Stephens County. The current 2-way stop-controlled intersection requires safety improvements to accommodate future traffic growth and a future 4-lane divided highway. The purpose of the project is to improve intersection safety and operations.
Three alternatives for a grade-separated interchange were evaluated based on traffic considerations, safety, land use considerations, and cost. ODOT proposes to construct an overpass and interchange at Duncan Bypass and Elk Avenue, with Duncan Bypass elevated over Elk Avenue. Constructing an interchange on an offset alignment will offer improvements to accommodate future traffic growth and enhanced safety, and offer a straight roadway between Elk and Beech avenues. The existing Duncan Bypass and Elk Avenue will remain open during construction and access to residences and businesses will be maintained.
