The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is evaluating the need for improving a segment of SH-51A between County Roads EW-71 and EW-74 located approximately 7.5 miles south of the Community of Southard in Blaine County. This segment of SH-51A has two sharp curves, multiple intersecting roads, and rolling terrain which results in inadequate sight distance to safely pass slow moving or turning vehicles. These factors contribute to a substantial accident history. The current traffic on this segment is 1,100 vehicles per day (vpd) and a 2045 projected traffic of 1,800 vpd with 26 percent truck traffic, which is higher than average.

ODOT recently tasked a consultant to study several alternative alignments to improve this extent of SH-51A taking into consideration the cost of construction, right-of-way and utilities as well as environmental constraints.

The purpose of this meeting is to present the proposed alternatives and to solicit public and agency input to aid in identifying the need for the project and selecting a preferred alternative before moving forward with the completion of the detailed environmental studies, design, and construction if a need is identified.
