Statistical Research Unit

Making Oklahoma's workplaces safer, one data point at a time.

The Statistical Research Unit of the Oklahoma Department of Labor’s (ODOL), Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health Division (PEOSH), plays a vital role in ensuring Oklahoma’s workplace safety and health through comprehensive data collection and analysis.  Data is collected through the State of Oklahoma’s Annual Public Sector Survey (PSEC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Statistics’ (OSHS) cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Annual Public Sector Survey (PSEC)

PSEC collects all injuries / illnesses / and fatalities occurring annually within Oklahoma’s Public Sector workforce.  The Public Sector includes all levels of Oklahoma government, such as, but not limited to, all political subdivisions of the state, counties, municipalities, and trusts performing services for the citizens of Oklahoma.  This survey provides comparative data highlighting safety program needs across various government entities within the state.

Occupational Safety and Health Statistics (OSHS)

BLS provides grants through cooperative agreements to all participating states across the nation, including Oklahoma.  These grants help states collect data through two unique programs: the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) and the Survey of Occupational Injuries & Illnesses (SOII).

Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI)

CFOI is an annual census of work-related fatalities across all Oklahoma workforces.  This data provides critical information on where fatalities occur and under what conditions.  This data is indispensable for employers in understanding future preventive measures and ensuring a safe and healthy workforce for Oklahoma employees.

Survey of Occupational Injuries & Illnesses (SOII)

SOII data collection is one of the most comprehensive counts of non-fatal, work-related injuries and illnesses in the United States.  By categorizing establishments by location, industry, and size, SOII ensures an accurate representation benefiting all participating states.  SOII data helps:

  • Identify circumstances and patterns of work-related injuries,
  • Develop safety training and educational materials,
  • Create industry-standard safety practices,
  • Enable employers and states to compare their injury and illness rates against national averages, and
  • Facilitate and improve academic research on workplace safety and health.

Making a Safer Oklahoma

Here's how your data makes a difference:

  • Creates a national overview when combined with other states’ data,
  • Enhances worker safety and health,
  • Improves program efficiency and effectiveness for both Oklahoma and federal enforcement programs, and
  • Maximizes the use of state and federal resources for the greatest statewide benefit.

Our data collection efforts are crucial to the mission of the ODOL: ensuring Oklahoma is a safe and healthy place to live and work.  The insights gained from our surveys and censuses help create safer work environments and informs the development of policies and programs that protect workers.
