Description
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the City of Stillwater, is proposing to improve SH-51 from Western Road to US-177 in the city of Stillwater in Payne County. SH-51 connects Stillwater to Tulsa, making it an important corridor for northern Oklahoma. The existing SH-51 from Western Road to US-177 is a four-lane undivided roadway with dedicated left-turn lanes at various intersections. Current roadway conditions make it difficult to make left turns, leading to delays in traffic, as well as safety and mobility issues. The roadway has poor pavement conditions and the sidewalks along the westbound side are intermittent west of Washington Street. The purpose of the project is to improve the operation and safety of the corridor. Additional objectives include managing access through the corridor and identifying and improving dedicated pedestrian crossings and connections.
The proposed improvements include expanding the roadway to a five-lane section by adding a center left turn lane and constructing a sidewalk on each side. Opportunities for improvements are being evaluated at multiple intersections within the corridor to improve mobility. Further, opportunities to improve aesthetics and drainage are also being evaluated within the corridor.
