What is Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation in Child Care?

  • A free service for child care providers in Oklahoma that provides a trained professional for on-site visits over an extended period of time.
  • Focus on supporting classrooms and assisting the program in solving specific issues that they may then build upon to help them with future experiences
  • Consultation offers staff tools, techniques, options and a partnership to address a variety of challenges that may arise when caring for young children

Consultation Goals

  • To support the staff by expanding their knowledge and understanding in responding to behaviors which are challenging
  • To emphasize the importance of early relationships
  • To promote positive social and emotional development in young children
  • To empower staff to link families to community resources

Who provides mental health consultation?

  • Consultation is provided by mental health professionals trained in infant and early childhood mental health, development and trauma.
  • Oklahoma’s Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation Learning Collaborative comprised of multiple state agencies and includes partnering mental health providers.

Who can receive consultation?

  • Consultation services are provided to child care centers and family child care homes throughout Oklahoma. Eligibility is determined by the Oklahoma Warmline.

Pyramid Model

The Pyramid Model provides a multi-tiered framework of practices for promoting the social, emotional, and behavioral skills of children from birth to five. The Pyramid Model includes: universal classroom practices to promote social-emotional learning and prevent challenging behavior; universal and targeted instructional practices to promote social, emotional, and behavioral skill development; and classroom interventions to support children with social, emotional, and behavioral needs.

Our Child Development Specialists are trained to teach the Pyramid Model curriculum to child care providers and offer Practice-Based Coaching sessions.
